Other Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why patient education?

A. Patients want and need to know about their medical conditions and treatment options. Educated patients are more likely to comply with prescribed regimens, achieve better outcomes and be more satisfied with their overall medical treatment.

Q. Why Patient Edu's interactive computer-based patient education?

A. Patients readily accept the Patient Edu format, which is presented as a discussion between doctors and patients, as time spent with the provider. The system’s combination of interactivity, digital video, and animated graphics has proven to be extremely effective in capturing attention and achieving comprehension. Unlike text-based materials or oral explanations, Patient Education systems offer assurance that patients truly understand their conditions, the recommended treatment regimens, and their role in achieving positive outcomes.

Q. How is the Patient Edu Patient Education system unique?

A. No other system offers customized patient education, informed consent documentation, data gathering, and manipulation in a single system. Additionally, it is unique in combining digital video and animated graphics with superior clinical content to present information in a highly understandable, engaging format. The system’s touchscreen interface makes it user-friendly and allows the patient to control the pace of the learning. DVD and VHS versions of the content are available.

Unlike other patient education content, the Patient Edu content is produced in bite sized modules we call topics that may be easily and quickly assigned by the nurse and viewed by the patient using our Patient Edu Software Delivery System. There is no shuttling through a lengthy tape or DVD to find that one piece of needed information. All of the topics are instantly available for viewing. This saves valuable nursing time.

Q. Can I modify the Patient Edu Patient Education content to reflect my own practice?

A. Yes. Patient Edu can produce a customized introduction for the beginning of each program that highlights information on the healthcare center, physician or practice. All print-outs and take-home videos can also display this information. The software can be branded with a practice's name and logo.

Q. How is the system installed and maintained?

A. Patient Edu will assign interactive technicians to install the system and nurse educators to train your staff. Maintenance will include regular on-site system check-ups and updates as well as emergency on-site visits when necessary. Additionally, technical assistance is available during regular business hours at 800-525-5912 or by e-mail at support@patientedu.com.

Q. Which specialties does the Patient Edu Patient Education system cover?

A. Patient Edu Patient Education is available for cardiology, orthopaedics, women's health, men's health, diabetes, asthma, stroke, and head and neck cancer.

Q. Are the topics written so patients can understand them?

A. All content is scripted at a 6th-8th grade reading level to facilitate easy comprehension.

Q. Who writes the clinical content and how often is it updated?

A. All content is written and reviewed by leading physicians, clinicians, behavioral scientists, and legal experts and updated periodically depending on the need.

Q. How long does it take for a patient to complete a session?

A. The average patient takes 16 minutes to complete a session on the Patient Edu Patient Education system. Duration will vary depending on topics assigned by the clinician and the pace at which the patient moves through the program. The topics range in length from 30 seconds to about 4 minutes and are joined together into presentations by the Patient Edu software delivery system.

Q. Does the Patient Edu Patient Education system collect outcomes data?

A. Yes, the system does have outcomes data collection capabilities that allow data to be easily manipulated, reproduced and is fully compatible with most system software. The data collected can be linked to the hospital's Electronic Medical Record system.

Q. What kind of equipment does the Patient Edu Patient Education system require?

A. We recommend that hospitals use stand-alone or networked Tablet PCs for their flexibility and ease of patient use, but the system can run on any current computer with media capabilities. We are currently recommending that hospitals consider the Motion Computing series of Tablet PCs. The content may, also, be delivered through a hospital's television system and operated with a set-top remote control or touchpad. Set up of the program's presentations can be done using the Tablet PC or any PC on the hospital's intranet using a web browser. View a PDF version of the User's Manual.
